cPEG
Welcome to our cPEG
page. This area is dedicated to those who use their PC to work with
MPEG1, MPEG2, and MPEG4 files. MPEG is an acronym for Moving Pictire
Expert Group. This subgroup of the ISO body is responsible for
defining the digital audio and video compression and encoding
standards known as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4. Since these compression
techniques are lossy (information is lost during encoding of the master,
so when decoded, the resultant AV streams are not faithful -
identical - to the original AV master streams), resulting in
diminished quality. That being said, of course they are still excellent or else they
would be of no use to the DVD movie industry for example. The use
compression arises from the need to reduce the size of files.
Technically, an encoding technique could be devised to produce digital
encodings so near to the original master the human eye could never
differentiate the two. The problem is, resultant files would take up too
much space to store and consume an unacceptable amount of bandwidth to
transmit. Its a matter of how much the original AV stream is compressed
and how much the human eye can tolerate. Each technique compresses more
or less than another and are thus more suitable than other for various
applications.
Briefly, MPEG-2 is superior to MPEG-1 for
compression and quality. Hence its use for TV and computer monitor
applications and DVDs. MPEG-4 has the highest compression therefore
lowest quality. Hence its use for small display screens and
surveillance. MPEG files can be stored on any
medium for editing, archiving, and playback purposes. Smaller files
(eg. short video clips) may be stored on hard drive (even downloaded
from the Internet) or on CD ROM media (cap. 680MB). Larger files (eg.
a full feature movie) is typically stored on DVD ROM media (cap. SLSS
4.7GB; DLSS 8.5GB; DLDS 17GB).
Our family of hardware and software tools used to create,
manipulate, store, and playback video MPEG files fall under the cPEG
brand name.
